I dropped off my CAAP Grant application yesterday down at the Chicago Cultural Center. The deadline is on Monday and they won't announce the recipients until May so I've got some time to wait before I know anything. I've been saving this excellent orange bubble mailer for years so I'm glad to finally be using it.
A few years ago I was starting to make packages for submissions and stocked up on nice paper, folders, disc stickers and cool mailing envelopes. Then I stopped submitting and have been carrying around these bright blue and orange bubble mailers. I'm glad to finally put them to use.
I just received notice that a piece from my "Ornament and Silence" serieswas accepted into an upcoming show at the Chicago Art Department in Pilsen. The show is titled "Cultural Excavation" and is focused around the idea of using things from the past to inform your work.
I thought this series was perfect as the source materials come from various time periods, cultures and styles and come together to make something new yet evokes a sense of nostalgia.
Sometimes it's hard to think of being an artist as a real job. If you're a studio artist, it's likely that you don't have a boss or co-workers, scheduled work hours or pre-determined objectives. You have to do all of it yourself. No one is really watching to see if you are being productive or doing your job well. Rarely are there deadlines, critiques, peers, competition... all things that I miss and am less productive without.
This blog is my way of setting some accountability for myself. In my regular studio routine, I sit down before I start to paint and write a to-do list. I intend for this blog to record my to-do list and my thoughts on my process. It's purely a tool to remind myself that there is more work to be done, and to help me track what I've accomplished.
